Just a few moments ago, they have drawn the 32 countries and put them in their respective groups. The results:
Group A: South Africa (host), Mexico, Uruguay, France
Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic, Greece
Group C: England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia
Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana
Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovenia
Group G: Brazil, Korea DPR, Ivory Coast, Portugal
Group H: Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile
Just by looking at this, England and Spain are in for quite an easy group stage and should be shoo-ins for the knock-out stage.
Every World Cup so far has had a "Group of Death", and I think for this year, group G is the hardest to get out of. Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast will be battling out for the 1 and 2 spots, and no offence to North Korea, but I don't think they'll make it at all, so it's a 3 horse race for the 2 spots to advance. Argentina also has a case, drawing against opponents who can hold their own with Greece/Nigeria and S. Korea. Oh, and I feel sorry for South Africa, drawing against powerful teams in their group. But eh, this is the World Cup. Should be fun!
The first match is on June 11th, 2010 in Soccer City Stadium in Johannesbrug.
